Why We Care for Orphans & Vulnerable Children (OVC)
At Romic Care Foundation (ROCAF), we believe every child deserves a safe home, a nurturing hand, a voice that is heard — and a future full of hope.
We do it because we believe children are not a burden to carry — they are the future to prepare for.
We do it because no child should suffer in silence simply because they were born into poverty, lost a parent, or are living with HIV.
We do it because when a child is broken, a nation cannot be whole.
Why it matters
Uganda is one of the youngest countries in the world — 57% of our population is under 18. These are the very citizens who will shape our economy by 2040, yet:
- 55% of children under 5 and 38% of those aged 6–17 live in multidimensional poverty
- They lack access to healthcare, education, nutrition, shelter, protection, and hope
But here’s what we know: Child poverty isn’t just about lack of income — it’s about broken systems, and broken promises.
And when a child falls into poverty, it can steal a lifetime of potential.
Our Belief, Our Mission
We believe that:
- A child without parents still deserves protection and guidance.
- A child who is abused still deserves safety and justice.
- A child living with HIV still deserves care, dignity, and opportunity.
- Every child — regardless of their background — matters.
That’s why we exist. That’s why we act.
What We Do
Thanks to the support from PEPFAR’s Small Grants Program, we’ve reached over 600 vulnerable children and caregivers in just one year (May 2023–May 2024). But the need is far greater.
Here’s what ROCAF is doing to change the story for OVCs in Uganda:
🔹 Identified and supported over 290 OVCs with direct services
🔹 Conducted psychosocial counseling for 133 children, including survivors of sexual and physical abuse
🔹 Helped 90 households begin the process of securing property and wills for orphaned children
🔹 Supported 12 court cases with expert testimony to ensure justice for child victims
🔹 Held radio campaigns, school talks, and household visits — reaching over 2,850 people with information on HIV, GBV, and children’s rights
🔹 Worked with schools, health centers, and local authorities to deliver services and ensure protection
